I can’t help feeling a tiny little bit sorry for Donald Trump. He will never know how it feels to be loved and safe and he is afraid of intimacy. I too am afraid of intimacy, but know it, he doesn’t.
Donald wears a mask to hide what he believes is his true self. I also unknowingly wore a mask but through trauma therapy, am healing and inexorably dismantling it, to uncover treasures, to be vulnerable but OK.
Narcissists are born of childhood trauma, abuse and emotional neglect. They forge their masks of seeming invincibility, their auras of success when they are tender young shoots to avoid unimaginable psychic and emotional pain. They don’t know they are unique and beautiful. If they let themselves feel, they will surely fall into deep, deep shame, believing they are worthless and unlovable. They believe they will be ripped to shreds.
Donald admires psychopathic leaders while castigating their victims because, to the little boy within, these damaged men look tough, like super heros, impervious to all that is weak and vulnerable in themselves. Hurting others deflects their own hurt. Better to project all that is vulnerable, empathic, kind and unsure, the best of humanity, onto others. To ‘feel’ is excruciating for one so damaged. Donald cannot regulate his own emotions, self-soothe, because as a child he was not taught how.
So, the child monster runs amok inside his own head and on the world’s stage and attempting to attribute motive outside the context of severe emotional dysfunction is pointless. Look to the DSM for traits of narcissism to reveal the underlying drivers for such dangerous and perplexing behaviours.
All politicians should be screened for narcissistic (and anti-social-psychopathy) personality disorders. Emotionally damaged adult children are not fit to hold positions of power.
